A Manual on Adolescents and Adults with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome with Special Reference to American Indians  by Ann Streissguth, Ph.D.  Although written in 1998, the characteristics of physical abnormalies and behavioral therapies are the same as those recommended today.  An excellent basic handbook and guide.  Available through www.amazon.com  at $13.99.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome:  Diagnosis, Epidemiology, Prevention and Treatment edited by Kathleen Stratton et. al.  An overview of the field dated 1996.  Best known for its diagnostic criteria.  National Academies Press.  $56.

The Out-of-Sync Child:  Recognizing and Coping with Sensory Integration Dysfunction by Carol Stock Kranowitz.  (1998) Deals with the problems of over/under sensitivity to sights, sounds, movement and physical contact experienced by children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.  New York:  The Berkley Publishling Group.  About $11.

Speaking and Learning the FASD Way by Carol McAndrew.  (2006)  Pittsburg:  Read lead Press.  McAndrew is a Special ed teacher with 25 years experience in the field.   Very concise.  helps to explain some of the "meltdown" behavior of children and teens with FAS(D).  $10.

Broken Cord by Michael Dorris.  (1989)  Harper-Collins-Perennial.  Michael Dorris was the adoptive father of a Native American Indian boy who had a severe case of FAS.   His book combines symptomology, research and an in depth description of the behavioral characteristics of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. It is considered to be the pioneer book on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.  Extremely well documented with an excellent research bibliography.  Available through most bookstores in paperback.  National Book Critics Award Circle Winner.

Damaged Angels by Bonnie Buxton.  An updated version of Broken Cord.  This is the story of a Canadian teenager whose parents discovered her problems and were able to use intervention techniques that have been developed since Broken Cord first came to the nation's attention.  Updated research and other vital information to help families and communites.  Available  through <www.amazon.com>.  $16.

Alcohol and Pregnancy:  A Mother's Responsible Distrubance by Elizabeth Russell.  The story of a birth mother who discovers the effects of drinking after her sons grow up.  Well written and documented.  Deals with jobs and residential living.  Order through <http://www.zeus-publications.com/>   $25 (Australian)
